WEEK 5 …...................................…..Whitehall 32  - Parkland 31

September 23, 2022

High School Football 2022

Coplay, Pa.   Zephyr Stadium

ybsports staff column,

At times Parkland running back Trey Tremba and Whitehall's Nigel Linton seemed to be competing for video clip supremacy during an important EPC matchup in South Whitehall on Friday evening.  Tremba weaved and powered his way in and around a fired up Whitehall defense Friday night while Nigel Linton simply zipped 80 yards on one trap play for a touchdown, and darted 33 yards for a another as the two teams traded blow for blow. Trailing by ten late in the third quarter the Trojans caught a break when Parkland's Jay Parker snatched a pick six to move the score to 21-18 Whitehall.  After tacking on a field goal, the game was tied at 21 apiece and stayed that way until the end of three periods of play..At the end of four periods of play,  the score was tied at  24 apiece. As the game went into overtime, the visiting team wound up getting possession first as Parkland's Trey Tremba put the visitors up  by six with a five yard burst off left tackle after a Whitehall encroachment penalty moved the ball five yards  closer for the visitors. The point after made it 31 to 24 in favor of Parkland.

Whitehall took their turn next and QB Trey Dogmantis came out firing with short pass to Jack Kocher that almost hit the ground, but Kocher was able to pick the ball up off of his shoe strings and stumbled the remaining five yards into the endzone untouched for the six. Whitehall Head Coach Matt Senneca then decided to go for the two point conversion and the win. On the play Quarterback Trey Dogmantis rolled right toward the right side of the field, then quickly turned back to his left and lofted a pass to a wide open Caden Weaver standing all by himself in the corner of the left endzone who safely pulled in the pass for the win.

September 23, 2022 …...........................…. Southern Lehigh 22 - Blue Mountain 18

High School Football 2022

Center Valley, Pa.   Spartan Stadium

ybsports staff column,

Peyton Faschnat of Blue Mountain scored first putting the visiting Blue Eagles up for an early six point lrad in the first quarter of their game in Center Valley against a consistent Southern Lehigh Spartan Football Team. The Spartans quickly struck back when  Quarterback Avery Koser hit streaking wideout Jack Ingless down the left sideline for a long touchdown pitch and catch. The point after made it 7-6 in favor of Southern Lehigh. Blue Mountain's Big Energy QB Tyler Miller threw for one score to Carson Kerstteder and ran for another as he dashed forty yards around right end to get to the endzone to keep his Blue Eagle in striking distance.

Playing in conditions that felt more like the middle of November with consistent gusts of cold air blowing across the field,  many in attendance made a quick dash for their cars at halftime just to warm up a bit. The game seesawed back and forth until late in the third quarter when Spartan running back Cade Sawyer took off on a 59 yard score down the left sideline to give his team a lead they would not relinquish. Neither team would put anymore points on the board as Southern Lehigh held on for the win and improved it's record to 4-1.

Souderton capitalized on just about every missed opportunity Council Rock North offered up and cruised to a 28-0 halftime lead en route to a thorough beating of the Indians.

WEEK 3

Northeast HS  14   -   Springside Chestnut Hill  12

September 9, 2022-

Wyncote, Pa.   Blue Devils Stadium

Northeast High School made the journey over to beautiful Wyncote to take on a tough Chestnut Hill Academy Football team on Friday afternoon. And at halftime the visiting Vikings knew why the Blue Devils are so well respected in their stadium, as Northeast went into the break at halftime trailing by a score of 12 -7 and by some accounts, that margin could have been even wider had the Devils been able to avoid some of the costly penalties the team found itself marred in.  DeShawn Ngwayah, the Vikings most prolific offensive weapon did much of the workload for Northeast on the day making his presence felt with bruising carries as he marched his team downfield deep into Blue Devil territory late in the second quarter. Ngwayah's determination was countered by Springside's durable Jaden Sumpter, who was coming off a three touchdown performance the week before against Martin Luther King at home.

SSCH Academy's Jake Warren top, and mate Tony Hicks lay the boom on Northeast' RB DeShawn Ngwayah.

SSCH Academy's Jalen Sumpter finds himself surrounded by the Vikings fast swarming defensive unit.

Nazareth Area HS  21   -   Bethlehem Catholic  6

September 9, 2022-

Nazareth, Pa.   Andrew S. Leh Stadium

Nazareth Area High School hasn't been left out of the mix when it came time to stand in line to receive their share of talent. The list is endless and you need to look no further than it's most recent fraternity member now playing at the highest level. His name is Jahan Dotson, a former Penn State University star receiver now playing on Sundays in the NFL with the Washington Commanders. Dotson isn't too far down the list of incredible athletes to put on the royal blue and white, but he stands alone as one of the very best if he continues to shine on Sunday afternoons. But as for taking their place in that distinguished line of super stars on Blue Eagle Hill, the name Sonny Sasso is one we may not soon forget. Sasso is the rare blend of athlete and skill and by the time he's done at Nazareth, he may be the proud owner of some pretty gaudy numbers the District 11 might not see again for some time. On Friday evening Sasso put his mercurial abilities out front for Bethlehem Catholic fan base to see and when it was over Nazareth lead on the scoreboard by a score of 21-6. Sasso threw for one score, ran for another and finally ran back a pick six for his last tally, all against one of District Eleven's premier football programs.

Nazareth's incomparable Sonny Sasso #12 (right) looks for room around a pesky Bethlehem Catholic defense.

Becahi found the going extremely difficult against a Nazareth defense that had only given up 14 points thus far.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Germantown Academy  28  -  The Hill School  21

September 10, 2022-

Fort Washington, Pa.   Carey Stadium

Germantown Academy Quarterback Tristan Machado is listed at only six feet even, but in big games he plays much bigger than his height. Machado, one of the Inter AC's shining stars is well equipped to lead the Patriots one of their best seasons in quite some time. To make that even more of a possibility he has a pretty good group of athletes supporting him like Seamus Knox and AJ Tawsen, as well as a host of others. Along with the aforementioned names, Germantown built up a 21-0 lead by the middle of the second quarter and it looked as if the wheels were about to come undone for the 'Hill School', but looks like can be a deceiving optic!  Rams' Coach Orlando Patterson saw to that. Coach Patterson, a stout man with an even bigger voice likes to lead from the front and on Saturday afternoon, his charges got the message loud and clear to the tune of 21 straight unanswered points in the last three quarters. The Hill's Jake Voynar was quick to respond for the Rams in the second half throwing two quick strikes for touchdowns within a two and a half minute span to knot the score at 21 apiece with one quarter to play. GA finished out the scoring in the fourth on a one yard blast by Anthony Lara making the final score 28-21 in favor of the Patriots. GA QB Tristan Machado finished with just over 250 yards on 211 of 29 attempts.

Germantown QB Tristan Machado attempts to avoid the grasp of The Hill School's DL Aaron Meadows.

Ok, So Let's Do This - Let's Take A Look At A Great QB's Vision!

It all begins with a controlled dropback by the Quarterback and a look downfield.

Off in the distance the QB locates his intended target and let's it fly.

Players watch as the ball takes flight in the intended direction.

The receiver hauls in the long bomb from the Qb and cradles it securely.

The end result...A score and a big smile from a supporting administrator on the right, observing the play!

WEEK 2

Cheltenham 20  - Northeast High 24

September 1, 2022-

Royersford, Pa.   ‘’ Stadium

For some reason or another, these two teams don’t have a lot of love for each other! That was evident even before the opening kickoff as the home team came right out the locker room and headed straight for the fifty yard line where visiting Cheltenham had already taken up residence. After all of the bad blood had ceased before kickoff, fans were treated to a very competitive game.  Why is there so much toxicity between the two clubs is unknown, but losing one of its' star player to the opposing team might be a good start in understanding the rift. It would carry even more weight if that star player was Kion Wright! You might have heard a little about the highly publicized transfer by Wright to Cheltenham High School this year. Wright is a true impact player at the defensive end position and who's been high on the list of several Division I programs, spent the last three seasons wearing a Northeast High uniform while thrilling the locals to some incredible football theater. Cheltenham got on the score board first, but Northeast got the win in this fast paced battle at Northeast's Charles Martin Stadium

Northeats's James Bermudez gets around the outside for a short gain against Cheltenham's quick defense.

* Note; one of the more encouraging sights was the efforts put in by the Northeast Security Guard and the Philadelphia Police Department who made all who were in attendance feel exceptionally safe.  Long line of people could be seen at the only entrance to the stadium as they were scanned and their bags were checked prior to being allowed in the game and the same process could be observed even at halftime. Kudos to those individuals!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jenkintown 45  - Kipp DuBois 0

September 2, 2022-

Jenkintown, Pa.   Drakes Stadium

Jenkintown High's Football Team played about as solid of a football game as a team could play and was looking for a workout in their home opener. Unfortunately, their opponent Kipp DuBois Charter got off on the wrong foot and spent the entire game trying to find the endzone. Jenkintown's do everything cornerback James Martin made life miserable for KDCA collecting two of Kipp's TJ Dillard's errant throws and returning them for scores. The highlight from a fans perspective is the enthusiasm and no quit approach shown by DuBois Head Coach Paul Bresil. Coach Bresil seems to be working with an under staffed group, but he's putting the work in in terms of instilling a fighting spirit in his team.

Kipp DuBois's Terrell Parrish had his hands full blocking out Jenkintown's incredibly aggressive pass rush.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Haverford School 14  - Bonner Prendie 12

September 2, 2022-

Ardmore, Pa.   Sabol Field / Spencer Stadium

Haverford's Ivan Harlamov, the Fords kicker, missed three field goals on Friday that may have given his team a more considerable lead over a game Bonner Prendie Football Team at Haverford's Spencer Stadium, but it was the fact that the Fords were within scoring range on three separate times and came away empty was the real issue. Playing at possibly the hottest part of the day and under clear and sunny skies, both teams struggled in the max heat conditions. Haverford's Matt Brosko, a junior running back, carried for over 130 yards on about 30 carries, was the only constant offensively for the Fords. QB Gavin Wright guided his team consistently into scoring range but was unable to ring up big plays to pull away from the pesky Friars who played incredibly well on the defensive side of the ball.

Springside Chestnuthill 48  - Martin Luther King 16

September 2, 2022-

Chestnuthill, Pa.   Blue Devils Stadium

City League meets the Inter AC! In a game marked by missed opportunities Martin Luther King found itself on the losing end of a lopsided loss against a Chestnut Hill Team

that plays together. To their credit, The King continued to fight through the adversity and put up sixteen points in the loss. Springside Chestnut hill's Greg Sumpter did most of the damage scoring four touchdowns from a variety of positions. I spoke with one of the for King afterwards and they expressed to me that they were expecting a pretty rounded attack from their opponents, but they weren't quite expecting the physicality from a run dominated attack that they had to deal with.

MLK players show patience and discipline following a disheartening loss at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

During an after game conversation with one of the back coaches, I asked where was the team headed for it's next game and he answered Wilson West Lawn. Good luck I offered, the Bulldogs are awfully tough at home in Gurski Stadium but anything can happened when the kids start believing in themselves.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Owen J Roberts 42  -  Wissahickon  6

September 2, 2022-

Ambler, Pa.   Trojans Stadium

The visiting Owen J Roberts Football Team had a feeling they could leave Wissahickon's Trojan Stadium with a win but I have afeeling they weren't expecting to win by a five touchdown margin.  Wildcats Quarterback Mike Reed and mates started things off early for OJ Roberts with an opening quarter 72 yard drive for a quick 7-0 lead. But the game's turning point came later in the period after Wiss gained good momentum and was actually looking ata first and ten from the visitors 11 yard line. But two penalties and a sack forced the Trojans to attempt a 39 yard field goal. During the kick the ball was blocked by a OJ Roberts player and was scooped up by  the Wildcats Colin King who raced untouched 75 yards to the endzone for histeam's second  score.. Things never improved for Wissahickon after that point and found itself on the losing end of a sound drubbing.

Owen J. Robert's cornerback Derrick Perry pulls down Wissahickon Running Back Ryan Woolf from behind.

Upper Dublin  35  -   Central Bucks West -7

September 2, 2022-

Fort Washington, Pa.   Cardinal Stadium

In an unexpected twist for most followers of the tough Suburban One Football Conference, The Upper Dublin Football Team made very strong believers out of a lot of people. It isn't that often that Central Bucks Wests gets it head handed to them in a pivotal early season game but there are exceptions! The Bucks, who hail from the County seat in Doylestown, Pa. are generally the ones doing the spanking but lean times appear to have come calling for the once incredibly proud football community.  Along with a bevy of momentum killers also known as penalties that can change the complexity of a game in a hot minute, CB West also had to contend with Upper Dubs very talented Quarterback Colin O'Sullivan. A four year starter, O'Sullivan can actually wing the pigskin all over the field with top gun accuracy and has tremendous touch on the ball. Central's Head Coach could only watch O'Sullivan amass nearly 175 yards and four touchdowns on 17 for 29 attempts. It's a good bet that Central Bucks aren't going to be the only team in Suburban One Football this year trying to solve O'Sullivan's magic .

Central Bucks Sean Blue looks for a way around the pursuit of Upper Dublin's Dominick Paone Friday night.

Chester High 32  -  John Bartram HS  6

September 3, 2022

Chester, Pa.   Clippers’ A Field   - The Clipper Community are building something really special in South Philly!

There aren't too many sure things in sports  especially when it involves high school sports///Especially if it involves high school football. That is except when the subject is Chester High's reloaded playoff bound Clipper's team. For the second week in a row the Clippers disposed of a Public League foe, only this time that foe just happened to be the defending AAAA District 12 Champion John Bartram Braves.  Bartram, playing their typical tough in the trenches style of defense refused to take one step backward against the multitalented Clipper offense who was without their freshman quarterback phenom Jalen Harris for the first period and a half of the game.  Until Harris was inserted into the game, backup QB Cymeer Brown was doing a more than capable job directing the offense. In fact when Harris finally did make his appearance into the game, his Clipper's were holding on to an 8-0 lead due mainly to Brown's contribution.  Brown then moved over to his wideout position and streaking completely unguarded down the middle of the field, promptly hauled in a bomb from Harris that covered more than fifty yards. The 2 pt conversion made it 16-0 as the teams made their way into halftime. Chester eventually doubled their lead and wound up closing the visitors out winning by a margin of 32 - 6.

Chester's free safety Colin Ferrell made life miserable for John Bartram's offense all day long at Chester's A Field.

Below Chester's Dominic Toy gives chase as he applies heavy pressure to the John Bartram signal caller.

John Bartram never got their offense untracked because of constant pressure from Chester's stifling defense.

A Chester Running Back finds he has nowhere to go amid a mass of John Bartram tacklers on Saturday.

WEEK 1

Emmaus 19  -  Freedom 13

August 26, 2022-

Bethlehem, Pa.   BSD Stadium

All columns and images by ybsports staff

At times Emmaus High School's Football Team looked every bit the part of a middle of the pack team and at times actually looked as if maybe they shouldn't be on the same field with their opponents, The Freedom High Patriots. Even their Head Coach Harold Flairclough looked a bit disheveled watching the execution of his troops during the first two quarters of Saturday night's clash against the defending District 11 Champions. In a rematch of last years district title game, the Green Hornets from Emmaus held Freedom scoreless for the entire second half of play. The only thing is Emmaus was only able to put up six points of their own but it was enough to seal the win. Emmaus senior RB Tylik Jarvis put up 141 yds on the ground on 28 carries while senior QB Jakke Fotta passed for 133 yds and a touchdown. On the touchdown play Fotta, connected with wideout Dylan Darville for a sixty yard bomb. Fotta also ran in for a score from a yard out.

Emmaus' Ben Merchado (left) and Freedom's Tyler DeLeon do battle in the trenches at BSD Stadium.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NDGP 41  - Saucon Valley 34

August 26, 2022-

Hellertown, Pa.  Panther Stadium

In a high scoring affair in Hellertown The Notre Dame Crusaders had to change up their style of play against a familiar foe en route to a win that could have playoff implications down the road. Junior Josh Ludlow, one of the Crusaders toughest players rushed for 151 yds on 20 carries and two touchdowns and also hauled in a 65 yard pass for a score from Quarterback Dan Darno. To his credit Darno was very efficient on the night leading his team to victory against a very capable Panther team. For Saucon Valley, Senior QB Travis Riefenstahl wouldn't quit and was instrumental in cutting the Crusaders lead to seven pointslate in the fourth quarter when he found team mate Jared rohn running across the middle and hit him in stride for a thirty one yard touchdown. Riefenstahl ended the night with 184 yds on nine of sixteen attempts and added 74 yards more of offense running with the ball on 16 carries.Saucon Valley's senior wideout Alex Magnotta snared three touchdown's on the night from Riefenstahl that totaled 74 yards additionally.

Saucon Valley's Alex Magnotta holds onto a touchdown grab while Notre Dame's Felix Lacerda tries to strip him.

Central High  0  - Chester 80

August 27, 2022-

Chester, Pa.   Clippers’ A Field

In a perfect world and based on years of existence Philly's Central High School would completely overwhelm Saturday's opponent the Chester Clippers. That theory is solely based on the two school's football programs have been around. For the record Central has a 155 year old time line in which it has been suiting up players. Chester High on the other hand has only 133. But as I said earlier, only in a perfect world would these number qualify as having any kind of merit. And on Saturday at Chester's 'A' Field, the younger brother laid down a pretty sound whipping on it's older one. And when it was over Chester had accumulated eighty points to Central's zero and in the process had limited the visitors to roughly 12 total yards of offense. For the most part, Central appeared to do everything in its power to increase Chester's momentum with mistake prone football. It is a proven fact that Chester is a better football team than Central, but they are not eighty points better! It's true, the Clippers are loaded with talent at just about every position and it's a scary fact that under classmen occupy most of these position. They just keep reloading the cannon with powder.

Chester's Dasmen Williams is all about pursuing the ball carrier in Chester's blowout win against Central High.

Central's Abraham Fofana #50, has to reach high to keep Chester's Dominic Toy from blocking a punt.

--------------------------------

At the end of last year the Clippers lost a ton of high powered players with all of them being seasoned and saavy components to a well oiled machine. Even though they finished the season with four losses including a state playoff loss, they seemed poised to strike again, but this time with a bevy of youngsters starting with Quarterback Jalen Harris. All he did was pass for over 300 yards on 12 for 14 attempts go 12 for 14 and six touchdowns passes. His main target was wideout Cymeer Brown who ended up pulling down five passes for 174 yards and 4 touchdowns. Jalen's twin brother Daron grabbed Jalen's final TD of the day. Although the Clippers fuel a high octance offense, defensively you have to have quality players on that side of the ball if you are pitching shutout football at this level and the Clips have that bag covered as well with defensive captain Noble Robinson and gang.

AB Carroll 0  -  PJPII 23

August 27, 2022-

Royersford, Pa.   ‘Our House’ Stadium

Same stadium, same colors, same system...kind of, but with a new head coach! The Golden Panthers program lost their coach of eight years when he dicided to take the head job over at Wissahickon High School in Montgomery County and in stepped first year assistant coach Scott Reed. And all he's done is install a new and improved fighting attitude with his players and that new attitude along with a few new wrinkles offensively was on full display on Saturday afternoon against Arch Bishop Carroll of the Philadelphia Catholic League. Paul, along with star running back Boyd Skarbek who rushed for 150 yds and three TD's systematically wore down their counterparts in incremental segments. Skarbek who also doubled as the Panthers defensive signal caller from his outside linebacker position and his mates capitalized on just about every miscue their opponent gave them..  Offensively the Panthers received steady play from its' Quarterback Luke Terlesky who threw for 115 yards on just thirteen completions Arch Bishop Carroll which had several ball handling miscues left coach Kyle Detweiler extremely disappointed with his charges as they dropped a competitive season opener on the road.

AB Carroll QB Omar Johnson barely gets the handoff to the running back before PJPII's Boyd Skarbek intervenes.
