#11 Penn State Wins At Rutgers, But It's Not That Easy

Ybsports Staff Column,
Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano is a good coach. No, make that a great coach! The good news… Schiano’s Scarlet Knights came out fired up on Saturday afternoon to a sold out crowd at Rutger’s SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey and they didn’t disappoint. At least not in the first period and a half as they went punch for punch with the country’s eleventh ranked Bowl Series Contending Nittany Lions Football Team. The bad news…they only did it for sixty minutes of football and not thirty! What is it about losing focus over a specified period of time when it is needed most? That seems to be the dilemma that Schiano and his assistant coaches have to figure out if they want to turn around the Scarlet Knights Football Program for the future. And as members of the BIG 10, it is a given that this ebb and flow of accepting losses will in all likelihood continue. You ask why…because the opposing teams in the League will not take it lightly losing to a little brother who is many many years their junior. The BIG 10 has been around an eternity and aren’t always too accepting to newcomers. But somehow the Great Dr Robert Barchi was able to work a deal, and get his beloved Scarlet Knight University in the door.
On Saturday Rutgers had every chance imaginable to stick the Nittany Lions on their back for a three count, but failed to do so. And in the end, the Lions turned loose their vaunted ground game led by Berks County native and former Governor Mifflin High School standout, Sir Nick Singleton. With his team trailing by a score of 3 to 0 and the Scarlet Knights unable to muster up any significant offense at that point in the game, they punted the ball away to Penn State. Singleton cradled the kick at the goal line and electrified the crowd with an array of shifty moves and cuts and that (whatsup) speed, ending up standing in the Scarlet Knights end zone, and flipping the ball to the nearest official while celebrating with team mates. Coach Schiano may have been ok with this after all, he and his team has had to battle through a season that hsa seen his team depleted by a rash of injuries that seem to keep piling up. Yet despite these setbacks, the players who are dressing are still playing their hearts out.
And on Saturday the Scarlet Knights had many opportunities to lay down a wide gap in the points spread margin between themselves and their opponent, but seemed ok with saying maybe this just isn’t the day to do it. Go figure! Sports and the Mentality Engine that is required to you allow you believe that this is your time is a difficult space to find for so many. Few have mastered it while others seek it and never find in their lifetime! To find the right lever to pull that will lend credence to the belief that it is ok for you to stand alone at the top of your sport, or whatever that may be, is a beautiful thing. Only thing is, when you finally find it, how much of it do you really believe? You will notice more and more how much of a space that ‘Sports Psychologist’s’ now play in today’s games! Why? Why is it that we need to have someone else shape our thinking of how we see our Greatness. Shouldn’t that be an internal cosmetic that is available to us whenever we need it, if only we choose to put it on!
Sooner or later the Rutgers Football Team will peer into a glass pane expecting to see ominous figures of their legendary [BIG 10] counterparts on the other side of it, only the images that will be reflecting back to them will be their own! Think about it for a few seconds! With most things being equal…Talent, speed, strength and other components of competition being level, and playing better than your opponent for the first one third of a contest, why then do you fall off the wagon and come apart? JUST BELIEVE!
