#NCAA Frozen Four Ice Hockey Regional Recap .......
Ybsports Staff Column,
The top seeded Michigan Wolverines had their hands full on Sunday night with a determined Penn State Nittany Lion Men's Ice Hockey squad during the Regional Final played last night at Allentown's beautiful PP&L Building. The B1G Ten's second ranked team scored what they thought was an early go ahead goal in the late part of the first period but replays clearly showed the puck hitting off the top bar of the net post. But in the second period the Lions struck goal when a redirected Christian Berger shot was picked up by Connor McDecker for a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way for the rest of the second period and all the way up to the seven minute mark. And for all intent and purposes, it seemed as if the longer the score remained 1 to zero in favor of Penn State, that an upset seemed more likely. But the Nittany Lions suffered their fourth power play pena;ty and Michigan's most effective scoring machine Adam Fantilli followed up on a missed Rutger McGroarity shot tying the game at one apiece. In the overtime period, the Wolverines scored within the first 90 seconds to send the higher seeded Wolverines into their nation leading 27TH Final Four appearance. The Nittany Lions finished their season with a 22-16-1 record and capped their 3RD Tournament appearance in the school's 11TH year of existence and that's quite impressive.
