LaSalle Storms Back From Huge Deficit In 1st Half..... APRIL 14, 2023
...."THE EXPLORERS HOLD HAWKS SCORELESS IN 2ND HALF"
Ybsports Staff Column,
Any one caring to take a shot at what constitutes momentum and if at all it is a real thing or just talk. Should have been at the boys varsity lacrosse game between LaSalle and The Prep from Saint Joe's High School. Beleaguered by what looked like low energy a bevy of violations in the first quarter, against the highly regarded Hawks program The Explorers found itself treading deep waters on their home field in front of a loud and raucous crowd. Although most of the fouls called on the Explorers were pretty much spot on much to the chagrin of LaSalle's exceptional Defensive Coordinator/Coach Tony Resch. But despite Resch's constant verbal interaction with one of the officials the calls kept coming and the more it seemed as if the Explorers were doomed to take an eight count. But in the second period Coach Resch loudly implored his troops to get into a tight diamond defense in front of the LaSalle goalie.
Not only did this strategy worked defensively but the offense seemd to benefit immensely as well. On the defensive side the Explorers got an amazing stop, then another and then magically there seemed to be a new infusion of aggressive play and high energy coming from the Explorer 'O'. The new 'D' also appeared to ignite a powder keg under the Explorers goalie as he made stop after unbelievable stop. Suddenly the pendulum of momentum had clearly swung completely toward the home team's side. Down 5-1 the Explorers managed to stave off two point blank shots on goal by the visitors and each time the Explorer bench erupted as if they had score a goal. That energy must have been infectious as play on the offensive side of the ball began to show sparks.
I've personally seen the Prep enough in person to know that when they get a five to six goal lead on an opponent they generally increase that lead exponentially and simply stated, most teams don't come back. I thought the Explorers showed remarkable patience when they got behind with their ability to make efficient time of the clock. That along with exceptional shot selection was the difference in the outcome of this game. The Explorers stuck to their strategy and were methodical in working the ball around and carefully picking their spots. With about 1:15 to go in the second period, two wicked releases by a LaSalle player produced two quick goals and just like that the score was all tied up at five apiece going into halftime.
