Chichester head coach Ryan Smith and Sun Valley skipper Greg Burnhardt, were totally inspired having their teams playing in the second annual “WIP” Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning at Anthony Apichella Memorial Field. The Vanguards lead the 51 game series rivalry by a 28 to 23 margin, ended their season with a (3-8) record. The home team Eagles finished with a near respectable record of (5-6) for the season. The highly anticipated Turkey Bowl games have been widely voted on by communities within Philadelphia and its’ surrounding Delaware, Montgomery, and Bucks County communities, and it has created an excitement far beyond the traditional hoopla associated with Thanksgiving Day games. In jumping out to a 14 point lead, The Eagles held a 21-7 lead at halftime and were never threatened by Sun Valley at any point during the game.

RIDLEY PARK WINS WIP’S INAUGURAL 'TURKEY BOWL' GAME

Ybsports Staff Column,
Ridley Park and Interboro are separated only by a set of railroad tracks that split the north side of the area from the south side. The two towns share a unique closeness, but make no mistake about it, the communities become bitter rivals come thanks giving morning. This year’s game has taken on new meaning with Philly’s own WIP sports station doing a play by play from the booth, and from the field with legendary sports celebrity Howard Eskin patrolling the sidelines and giving radio fans a field perspective. Besides the fact that the game features another fabled Philadelphia rivalry, there are still so many more side bar stories to this game that it makes it a must see event if you’re a fan.
For starters, most of the players from both teams were team mates as pop warner players at St Gabriel elementary. Second, there are so many intertwined relationships that connect families and friends, And third, there is that celebrity status thing with former Eagle and famous alum, Vince Papale making a guest appearance. You might remember him, the guy who grew up in Prospect Park, a suburb of Philadelphia, and somehow made the team as a walk on when legendary coach Dick Vermeil had the reins. A hit movie of Papale’s life chronicled his improbable rise to stardom as a rare NFL walk on.
The PIAA caused the cancellation of the traditional game in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2012 because of a change in the playoffs format, but the rivalry was never far from the mind of the fans. This year Ridley came into the game with a 7-4 record and a stte ranking of 103. Meanwhile the Bucs from Interboro sported just the opposite with 4 wins against 7 losses and no chance to advance into the PIAA post season tournament. Interboro drew first blood and appeared to be in upset mode, but Ridley’s Ociele Miller, a 5’ 8” 160 pound senior made the game his own personal showcase. Blessed with outstanding speed, Miller torched the Bucs with touchdown strikes from long distance as he led his team to a Thanksgiving victory in style.
