THE RUNNING OF THE REGATTA ON THE SCHUYKILL RIVER COME RAIN OR SHINE!

YBSPORTS STAFF COLUMN,
Canoeing on the Schuylkill or rowing on the Delaware River. For many years that was the picture I allowed myself to see whenever I read about The Dad Vail Regatta, or The Navy Regatta on Boathouse Row. But it’s so much more than that! The most recent addition of The Dad Vail was held in Philly a few weeks ago, and as a fan who has attended the last ten, this one was even better than the last nine. One can never tire watching the intense competition between colleges and high schools from as far west as Colorado and as far north as Wisconsin and all places in between.

Cont'd from front page;
Rowers are a special breed of people and carry an unending devotion to their fellow rowers. You have to have a special love for sculling to participate at a high competitive level. Think I’m kidding…just hop in a scull and try rowing up river. With a friend! Saturday’s competition was filled with competitors and supported by friends and family members who whole heartedly were ready to embrace newcomers to the sport and to share racing information.
It is a fraternity, or a sorority if you will that’s not easily invited into, but once there, you have a family for life!
One of the bright spots was the dedication of the volunteers who handle most of the on water escorting of the race sculls for safety and race control. Volunteers play as much an important part of the competition as anyone else and their contribution is incredibly valuable. There are several regattas held on the Schuylkill during the months of May, June and July as well as well September, and all spectators are as welcomed as if they were family.
