YBSPORTS STAFF COLUMN,
This year marks the first time in the last forty years where Pocono Raceway will only have one Nascar racing event to showcase to its’ loyal fans. The news the racetrack will only get to host one race has been upsetting for all , especially for the thousands who have looked forward to making their annual two stop visit to Long Pond in the months of June and July. The stories fans can tell recounting their best memories are endless, yet there will still be one opportunity to build on those memories. Why the change of heart by the Nascar Brass, that’s anyone’s guess but is it possible that we may undoubtedly see a paradigm of sorts in tracks where races are run..
A paradigm where Nascar will attempt to make just one stop only at each location in order to expand their visibility in as many regions as possible! In other words, are the days of two a year coming to an end for the likes of iconic places like Daytona, Charlotte, Thunder Valley…aka Bristol Raceway, etc? I put Pocono in that class of icons as well! NHRA appeared to have made the shift to one timers’ some years ago so could Nascar be thinking the same thing? Could they be thinking that there would be so much more economic gain for the Mega Power if the demographics and calculations were carefully examined and extrapolated outward well enough? No one really knows, but to what end and what sacrifices would that be necessary?
There’s an old saying that may hold true here that says… Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, or was it…The grass isn’t always greener on the other side that I am thinking of! For forty years or there about, Pocono Racetrack has played host to building memories for fans from all walks of life and all ages, at the same time boosting the economic fortunes for countless numbers of businesses in the Pocono area, and that alone is a memory worth reflecting back on…over and over. For the record I can say personally that Dr. Rose Mattioli was a person of high equality thinking and was marvelously gifted in her humanitarian position in life as she will be missed for an eternity. Also for the record, it has been said that it takes a village to raise someone up, and Long Pond Racetrack has played an integral part of being part of that in building Nascar’s mega empire and one would easily surmise that they (The entire Pocono area) deserved better than this!
