BAYLOR WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL TITLE

“THE PINNACLE AWAITS.” That is the marquee inscription that adorns the courtside scripture at Nugget arena in downtown Denver. This logo seemed to be a perfect memo to the Fighting Irish women’s basketball team, after all, they were playing in their second straight national championship game and against…you guessed it, Brittney Griner and her fellow Lady Bears from Baylor, Texas. Down by 25 points with 4:40 left in the second half of last night’s National Championship game against Baylor and their Head Coach Kim Mulkey, Notre Dame Head Coach Muffet McGraw took one final look down court at her coaching rival then proceeded to sit down on the Notre Dame bench next to her assistants to watch the rest of the game. McGraw got up once at the 2:21 mark to exercise a replacement of one of her players and went back to her chair and again at the 1:31 mark as she rose and took a spot along the court in front of her team for the final time. She would only stand long enough to scour the court and observe her team’s offensive set, then return to her seat to watch the final seconds tick off the clock.

26 points and 13 rebounds is what Brittney Griner, Baylor’s number one force and the team’s fine junior center would put into the books for her nights work as the Fighting Irish from South Bend had absolutely no answer for her. Griner’s efforts eventually earned her the tournament’s Outstanding Player Award.

The Lady Bears are the seventh team to go undefeated since 1992 and their head coach, Kim Mulkey, who is battling Belles Palsy, can cite the rare distinction of being the only

person to win a National championship as a player, and as a coach. Things are going well for Baylor and its’ sports programs as the men’s hoops team made it to the final eight this year, and the school’s football team finished their season ranked in the top ten in the country while its’ quarterback, Robert Griffin III culminating the season by winning the Heisman Trophy.
