NEWS FROM THE PENN RELAYS

Every year the Penn relays seem to take the level of anticipation for their fans and for this great racing spectacle to a new level. And every year the level of excitement reaches another gear, mostly because of the who’s who list of stars that will be making their way into Franklin Field. To compete on the ceremonial ground that hosts this sacred carnival. This year’s buzz words are “Marquise Goodwin” and LSU. In case you aren’t too familiar with The University of Texas Football and you weren’t following their return to national prominence last fall after a lengthy absence, the name Goodwin name may not mean very much to you. But if you were a follower of college football and noticed the surge of redemption from Mack Brown’s Longhorns’ you would probably know that the speedy Goodwin had a lot to do with their offensive firepower and their return to prominence. The five foot nine inch dynamo caught over thirty passes last fall and averaged over ten yards on the ground whenever he touched the ball for the burnt orange and white. Goodwin also jumped over 26’ feet in his only showing on the track this year making him a formidable foe for any competitor to go up against. The human highlight reel will competing in both the relays and the long jump at this year’s Penn relays, and for your money, you could not have picked a better way to spend it. For many years Louisiana State University has led the way in Track & Field for the SEC and this year’s contingent isn’t giving away any ground to the previous champions. Loaded at just about every position on the track, the Bayou Bengals will be a force to be reckoned with.

Dr. LeRoy Walker, The First Black President of the United States Olympic Committee

From 1969 to 2010, Dr. LeRoy Walker was a fixture at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and little did many of us know that the same person coached several great Olympic champions during his tenure as a college and Olympic leader. A love affair that began in the sixties and spanned five plus decades, the city of brotherly love, Pennsylvania University and LeRoy Walker shared a bond that for all we know was unconditional and a time tested relationship that lasted up until the time he deceased two days ago. Many will miss Dr. Walker’s presence and for a great many reasons, I could give you forty of them right now (as in the number of years he served as a Penn Relays officiate), but no one will miss him more than one Dr. William H Cosby Jr. The Penn relays, and Bill Cosby, Bill Cosby and the Penn Relays, two things that are synonymous and when I think of great people like Dr. Walker I can’t help but to think how his contributions to the Relays were forged some time ago perhaps with the hopes of making a path for Bill Cosby to accept the reins as The Relay Poster Icon.
