# 2  "THE" (OHIO STATE) TOO MUCH FOR RUTGERS WRESTLING TEAM

RUTGERS - 11                 OHIO STATE -  29

(3-3) .                                 .(7-0)

Piscataway, NJ.    The RAC

YBSPORTS STAFF –

Rutgers Eleazar DeLuca controls fifth ranked Ke-Shawn Hayes, upsetting the Buckeye wrestler at 149 lbs.

Two words sum up THE Ohio State wrestling team…very good!  Conversely, eight words sum up the effort put forth last night at The RAC by several Scarlet Knight wrestlers…You need to do a little more work! Yeah, The Ohio State has great balance and yes, they might be loaded from top to bottom, and if you’re an opposing coach, you have you work cut out for you when game planning. But anything is possible! With seven wrestlers ranked six or higher nationally, and three who are ranked number one, there are no weak spots. Somehow the Scarlet and white were able to pull off two upsets, and they had to work for those, and one dominating win. Eleazar DeLuca, a 149 lb transfer from out west, trailed Ohio State’s Ke-Shawn Hayes in the second period, and looked all but beaten until he miraculously came up with a throw that put Hayes on his back. Another throw that pretty much mirrored the first stuck Hayes on his back again. Judging from the home crowd’s reaction one would have thought that bout was the defining one that had given the Scarlet Knights the upset!  At 167lbs, Rutgers Richie Lewis handed the highly regarded Te’Shan Campbell a 5-2 loss with a cat quick scramble near the end of their match that sealed that win. The final Rutgers win came from Goodale’s intrepid liitle Nicky! Suriano, one of the top wrestlers in the country at 125lbs, put on a takedown clinic while tech falling Brakan Mead, 24-9.  Those three wins gave the Scarlet Knights a respectable 11 points, just 18 short of their opponents, and gave their loyal fans something to look forward to for the future.

RUTGERS LOOKING TO CLIMB THE LADDER IN B10 WRESTLING ON SUNDAY”

Piscataway, New Jersey

The Louis Brown-RAC

YBSPORTS  STAFF,

Rutgers looks to continue their winning ways when they take on second ranked Ohio State in wrestling at the RAC on Sunday. Coach Scott Goodale has built a powerhouse in the Scarlet Knights, who just came off a winnable match against one of the country’s premier wrestling programs in Iowa. The Hawkeys, long known as a formidable wrestling institution, have earned their legendary status due to the likes of producing wrestling greats such as the Brand brothers, and Mr. Dan Gable, one of the most successful competitor to ever don a wrestling singlet. One could even argue that Coach Goodale didn’t do his club any favors by scheduling such a tough string of opponents one after the other but, he can’t be faulted for having to wrestle up to the level of competition the BIG 10 has to offer. So its’ sink , or swim!

Aside from seventh ranked Iowa, fellow conference mates Ohio State and Penn State are ranked two and one in the country respectively, with Penn State scheduled to make a stop in Piscataway in late January.  Sunday’s match at the RAC had the potential to showcase two of the most competitive matches of the year in the Nathan Tomasello versus Nick Suriano bout at 125 lbs, as well as current Rutgers iron man Anthony Ashnault, going up against previous national prep champion Joey McKenna, formerly of Blair Academy at 141lbs. These two bouts would have also featured a laundry list of past New Jersey High School wrestling legends, who’ve gone on to build very successful college careers. Suriano, formerly of Bergen Catholic, is so good he probably would have wrestled for the national title a year ago had it not been for injury. Also because of injury, the much anticipated bout between Ashnault and McKenna, is highly unlikely, and the spinoff between Suriano and Tomasello will not occur because of a personal promise Tomasello made to his best friend who was getting married on Saturday.  The pick here is a surprise one for the ybsports team, as we’re giving the nod to the Buckeyes by 23 -19 score because crazy things have been occurring at the RAC this year, starting with the university’s men and women’s basketball teams.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are scheduled to take the mat at The RAC at high noon on Sunday.

LEHIGH WOMEN GET AN EARLY JUMP ON LEAGUE LEADING NAVY

Lehigh Mountain Hawks - 66                Navy Midshipmen -63

Stabler Arena - Bethlehem, Pa.

ybsports staff column,

If you’re an avid jogger, and you really enjoy the sport, then Lehigh University’s south mountain sports complex offers a great scenic backdrop for this occasion.   On a good day, and if you’re lucky enough, by chance meeting you just might run into the Lehigh Women’s Basketball Coach Sue Troyan, and her awesome looking puppy jogging as well. Coach Troyan undoubtedly likes to stay in good shape, and this takes discipline. But self discipline isn’t the only place Coach Troyan expects to find it. You can easily see this in a Sue Troyan coached team, or you could simply ask Navy’s Women’s Head Coach, Stefanie Pemper because she had a birds’ eye view of it on Tuesday evening. Coach Troyan’s gang of five executed brilliantly down the stretch in the fourth quarter exhibiting tremendous discipline, as they turned back the Midshipmen, by a score of 66-63 before a sparse crowd at the arena.

Navy came into the contest sporting a haughty 11-1 record, and by all accounts, Lehigh’s (7-5) slate didn’t appear to offer much of a challenge for the ball hawking military troupe from Annapolis. To their credit, the Mids wouldn’t give up without a fight, and actually went on a 6-0 run in the middle of the second half to take a 46-44 lead. But a short time later Lehigh’s Quinci Mann hit a three point shot to break a 54-54 tie, and that would be the last time the Mountainhawks would trail in the game. Navy actually had a chance to send the game into overtime when they took the ball out near half court, but senior guard, Taylor Dunham’s three point attempt from just outside the arc, caromed off the rim ending the threat. Lehigh moved to 2-0 in all important early Patriot league contest while the Midshipmen dropped to 1-1 in the standings.

NY RANGERS TURN BACK THE SABRES IN TENTH “WINTER-CLASSIC”

New York Rangers 3 Buffalo Sabres 2  F/OT

CITI FIELD - Flushing, NY.

YBSports Staff,  Russ Harris

Members of the Sabres and Rangers in pursuit of the puck on January 1, 2018, STAFF PHOTO

As I painfully climbed the stairs that led to the 500 level at Citi Field where this years’ Winter Classic was being played, the first noticeable problem I encountered was the howling wind coming in at both ends of the corridors. It didn’t seem the least bit interested in letting up.  Interesting I thought! It was at least an hour from game time, and the temperature was hovering around 12 degrees above zero Farenheit, and that wasn’t about to change anytime soon. As the crowd funneled into the stadium, I began to notice just how many of them were adequately dressed to stay the entire 3 hour duration the classics normally run. My guess was all of them! They were I thought, the genuine article. But the one thing that convinced me that these loyal fans were indeed loyal to their sport came within the first 5 minutes of the game. It was here that the Rangers scored their first goal, but before the scoreboard screen could display it, or even before the (red) goal lamp came on, they knew that a goal had been scored. Was it something that occurred that I couldn’t see, or was it their intuition? Maybe it was just their ability to read the body language of the players scrambling to score a goal that they saw! Whatever it was, it made a believer out of me, because not only did they repeat this feat on that occasion, but two more times as the Rangers put the game on “ICE” in overtime.

* SIDE NOTE;

J.T. Miller decided the tenth anniversary of the NHL’s winter classic with a goal in overtime by directing the puck into the back of the net to break a 2-2 tie at chilly Citi Field, in Flushing Queens, New York yesterday afternoon. Miller’s goal gave the visiting Rangers the win, and kept their “Classic” record sparkling, as they remained unbeaten in (winter classic) games at 2-0.  Although the Sabres were billed as the home team at this years’ event, their fan base was easily outnumbered by the hordes of Ranger fans as the crowd resembled a wave of Ranger Blue and Red throughout.

Team members for the Sabres collect their thoughts while the referee warms his hands during a TV break.

NEW YORK HOSTING THE TENTH WINTER CLASSIC AT CITI FIELD

Queens, NY.

Citi Field is famous for putting on quite a baseball show! It is in fact where New Yorks’ other famous baseball team calls home. But tomorrow Citi Field will play host to the NHL’s annual outdoor hockey wonder classic aka as the “winter classic”, between the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers. The two teams will also break out their new jerseys for this years “classic” in what is being billed as the “cross state classic”. The puck is set to drop for the “classic” at 1:00pm with temperatures barely going above the 20 degrees mark.

Happy New Year!

Princeton Ties No. 1 St Cloud State on Second Night

Princeton 2 St Cloud State 2  F/OT

HOBEY BAKER ARENA,

Princeton, NJ.

YBSports Staff,

Just like they did the night before, the Nation’s number one ranked team, St Cloud State, found themselves trailing a determined Princeton Tigers Men’s Hockey team in the third and final period by one goal. And just like they did the night before, The Huskies found a way to even the score in the final stanza, and send the game into overtime. And the same as the night before, St Cloud State also found a way to keep the host team from scoring in OT, thus staving off a loss against a foe hell bent on making a name for itself against top tier teams. The night before Princeton received a gallant effort from its’ true freshmen netminder, Ryan Ferland (37 saves) to bang out a 3-3 tie at Hobey Baker Rink, but tonight it took an all out effort from team mates David Hallisey, Ryan Kuffner, Eric Robinson, Jackson Cressey and Josh Teves to keep the Princeton Tigers level with the country’s sixth best power playing teams all year. St Cloud State, playing as physical a game as you would want, matched Princeton’s play with a tough in your face offensive attack that often found Princeton playing on advantage at the penalty phase. The Huskies countered with excellent play from two of its’ leading players in Blake Winiecki, and it’s leading scorer, Jimmy Schuldt as they refused to go easy in the Princeton night air. Their five star goalie, Jeff Smith did his best imitation of Henrik Lundqvist in keeping Princeton from running away with the game, early in the second period. Number one rankings are hard to come by, and teams that have achieved this lofty status, aren’t going to give it up just like that, and anyone looking to topple them, had better be wearing their “big boy” pants! St Cloud State, which suffered its’ only two losses to perennial power, and two time defending national champion Denver, now moves to 12-2-3 on the year, while the Tigers from Princeton move to 7-6-3 on the year.
